New GPS unit offers 8-bit entertainment

Monday, September 29th, 2008

Some time ago GPS devices were for one thing only: helping drivers find their way. But lately manufacturers have started adding new features, such as support for disabled people.

The KW-GM4306TG from Kinwei Technologies could be labeled as a GPS unit with support for bored people. The innovation? 8-bit games. It’s not like a PSP, but it can still keep someone entertained during rush hour or on long trips (one of the passengers in the latter case, of course).

The GPS comes with a 4.3-inch TFT LCD touch screen with a resolutions of 480 x 272 pixels and a controller for the games. If you have a rear view camera you’ll be happy to know that the KW-GM4306TG has an AV-in port it can be plugged in.

Other features:

  • Navigation software: ARMV4I compilation, software stored in SD card
  • Built-in Bluetooth module and antenna
  • Hands free communication and shows incoming phone numbers
  • Memory slot: SD card and MMC card
  • Built-in 3.7V Li-ion battery
  • Supports multiple languages

Yahtzee set for Harley fans

Friday, September 26th, 2008

Dice wouldn’t be the first thing most people would think about when they hear “Harley-Davidson product”, but… indeed you can find them, in the form of the Harley Davidson Travel Yahtzee set.

Harley Davidson Travel Yahtzee set

The set includes 5 custom Harley-Davidson dice (of course), custom Tin Oil Can dice cup, score pad, pencil and rules. I don’t know if there’s many biker Yahtzee fans out there… but if you know one, now you have a good idea for a present.

Red & blue lights look cool, might get you a fine

Friday, September 12th, 2008

This is one of those gadgets that can go very wrong… You can get the Traffic Prompters in blue or red and, while they’re not exactly like the ones on police cars, they’re pretty damn close. They could come in handy at times, but really, red and blue lights with magnets are begging to be put on a car. Then you could wonder why you paid $16 for some gadget that just got you fined.

$74 ensures you won’t lose the car in the parking lot ever again

Tuesday, September 9th, 2008

GPS devices are useful in many ways, but they have a downside: they’re expensive. And if all you want is a solution to a simple problem, there’s no need to spend a lot.

Bushnell BackTrack

The Bushnell BackTrack is probably the most basic GPS available. You push a button and it remembers the position to guide you back. If you’re one of those people who can never remember where they parked their car and regularly end up searching the whole parking lot, you might consider one. Or, then again, maybe not, since (while it’s still cheaper than full-fledged GPS devices) it’s $73.95.

However, since it’s not limited to one use, it could be worth the money: use it to find your way at festivals, while traveling or camping and while getting lost in the woods hiking.

Save money and the environment with the Blade

Thursday, September 4th, 2008

“Reduce emissions of greenhouse gases up to 34%, reduce emissions of air pollution up to 57%, save hundreds of dollars per year on gas” sounds too good to believe, but this is what the Blade promises. An apparently simple device that attaches to a car’s tailpipe can do all that.

Blade

So how does it work?

The profile of a vehicle’s exhaust is not that of a continuous stream. Rather, a vehicle’s exhaust profile is a series of pulses. Changes in the exhaust’s pulse profile and changes in exhaust velocity through the tailpipe have a direct effect on both the catalytic converter and the fuel delivery system.

The Blade, which is installed on the end of the tailpipe, compresses the exhaust pulse profile, thereby reducing the space between the pulses. The patent pending design of the Blade allows this exhaust pulse reduction to adjust over acceleration and deceleration of the vehicle so that the ECU reads within normal tolerances.

According to the tests conducted, Blade reduces emissions, and/or improves fuel economy in three ways: improves the efficiency of the catalytic converter, increases the volumetric efficiency (VE) of the engine and filters gasoline and hydrocarbon particulates, as well as other solid inorganic emissions.

Since the Blade works by attaching it to a car’s tailpipe, the most important thing to check before buying one is if it will fit. A quick checklist:

Forget the floor. RC cars can now race across the ceiling.

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2008

“Oh no, not another RC car”? Yes… and no. It’s not “just another RC car”. Have you seen toy cars that can climb walls before?

Zero Gravity Micro R/C Car

The Zero Gravity Micro R/C Car can race on the floor, on the walls and even on the ceiling (and because there’s 4 frequencies available you can really set up races). Magic? No, just smart design.

“Zero Gravity Micro features an advanced Venturi suction system that works a bit like a vacuum cleaner. Special fans create massive down-force to keep it glued to the wall whilst flexible skirts around the chassis ensure the vacuum remains sealed.”

As expected, racing across the ceiling takes up a lot of power, so the designers also thought about this and equipped it with 2 modes of operation: Regular Mode, for best performance on the ground, and Extreme Mode, for gravity-defying stunts.

Is there anything better than this in the RC world? I doubt it.

Grom USB car interface streams music from a flash drive

Monday, September 1st, 2008

Nowadays you’ve got many ways of streaming music in your car, be it with an FM transmitter or a car tape adapter. The inconvenience is obvious: you need an mp3 player (with a working battery… as many of us have found out, iPods do tend to die during long trips).

GROM USB MP3 Car Interface

The GROM USB MP3 Car Interface eliminates that problem: it connects any flash drive directly to the car stereo. Unfortunately, right now you can only use it if you own an Audi, BMW or Volkswagen. But there’s good news for Acura, Chrysler, Honda, Mazda, Mercedes, Škoda, and Toyota owners: a version for their cars is planned for this month, so be on the lookout.
