2010 BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics Concept

A symbol for the future of Sheer Driving Pleasure, BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics Concept is a high performance study with BMW combining an active hybrid technology with a typical dynamic performance in the context of future demands regarding sustained mobility. Due to the highly emotional character together with fuel economy and emission management of a modern small car in the premium class, this unique sports car offers a very convincing interpretation of the BMW Efficient Dynamics development strategy.

This new revolutionary concept provides a good balance of the CO2 emission management and highly driving pleasure, and as a result CO2 emissions were reduced to 99 grams/km. Being a plug-in hybrid, BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics covers the entire fuel consumption drive cycle under the electric power only. Taking into account that the used energy sources for generating the electric power (EU electricity mix) C02 emissions rating is reduced to 50 grams per kilometer.

The novelty is that the electric power is generated without any increase of the fuel consumption, but through a very efficient in concept of Brake Energy Regeneration. The electric power is stored in 98 lithium polymer cells enabling the car to cover a 50km(31 miles) distance in the electric mode alone. Aerodynamics were developed from Formula 1 with CX coefficient being optimized to just 0.22 from the ground up to a new level of efficiency combined with a unique driving experience. The used technology shows a full-hybrid concept, powered by a three-cylinder turbo diesel and two electric motors. The system outputs 262kw/356hp with a maximum torque of 800 Newton-meters/590 lb-ft. BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics Concept uses all-wheel drive system together with an electric motor on both the front and the rear axle. The car gets from a standstill position to 100 km/h in 4.8 seconds at a top speed of 250 km/h (155 hp), electronically limited. The fuel consumption rate in the EU test cycle is 3.76 liters/100 km(75.1 mph imp) demonstrates the forward-looking energy management, using the maximum potential available to minimize the fuel consumption.

The new BMW concept is an optimum combination of a hybrid synchronous motor on the front axle and a full-hybrid system at the rear, as a second generation full-hybrid system with a technology provided by BMW Active Hybrid 7 production model. The position of the compact electric motor is between the diesel engine and the DCT outputs. With the new Brake Energy Regeneration System, the energy usually wasted on the brakes in the case of a conventional car can now be saved within the new power system for a future use in driving the car because when the brakes are applied the electric motor generates and feeds the lithium-polymer battery in the car with electric power. This makes BMW EDC able to run completely under electric power. The exterior design shows a technology-oriented perspective of the manufacturer, with a clear expression of a consistent light-weight technology and aerodynamic quality. The design language is typical for the brand in terms of sporting performance and optimum efficiency. BMW Vision Efficient Dynamics Concept is a 2+2 seater including dynamic performance and high efficiency and enhanced levels of all round functions. The model is equipped with gullwing doors opening to the side while the innovative, weight-optimized door kinematics provide an easy entrance at both front and the rear part of the vehicle. The interior also demonstrates the very latest of modern technology, using natural materials to underline the company`s strategies towards sustainability. The roof and the door inserts are made of polycarbonate glass, a material that automatically becomes darker as a function of incoming light.
